Who is Lord Shani Dev? The Cosmic Judge
In the vast pantheon of Vedic deities, Lord Shani Dev stands as one of the most misunderstood yet profoundly significant figures. Known as the personification of the planet Saturn (Sani), he is the celestial magistrate who oversees the accounts of our Karma. Unlike other deities who may grant boons of immediate pleasure, Shani Dev grants the boon of spiritual purification through discipline, hardship, and truth.
Birth and Divine Lineage
Lord Shani was born to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Mata Chhaya (the Shadow goddess). Mythology tells us that Mata Chhaya was created by Sanjna (Surya's first wife) to take her place as she could no longer bear the Sun's intense heat. Because Shani was born from a shadow and performed intense penance while in the womb, he was born with a dark complexion. When he first opened his eyes, the Sun went into an eclipse, signifying Shani’s power to overshadow even the mightiest forces to ensure justice.
