What is Shravan Putrada Ekadashi?

Shravan Putrada Ekadashi, also known as Pavitra Ekadashi or simply Putrada Ekadashi, falls on the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) Ekadashi of the Shravan month. The word “Putrada” is derived from two Sanskrit words — “Putra” (son/child) and “Da” (giver) — meaning “the one that grants offspring.”

This Ekadashi is different from the Pausha Putrada Ekadashi that falls in the month of Pausha (December-January). Both Ekadashis share the same significance of blessing devotees with children.

Significance of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi

The significance of this Ekadashi is mentioned in the Bhavishya Uttara Purana, where Lord Krishna narrates its glory to Yudhishthira. Key spiritual benefits include:

  • Blessing of Progeny: Childless couples who observe this vrat with sincere devotion are blessed with a worthy son or daughter.
  • Well-being of Children: Parents observe this fast for the health, prosperity, and long life of their existing children.
  • Removal of Sins: Observing this Ekadashi vrat destroys accumulated sins (paap) and purifies the soul.
  • Attainment of Moksha: The merit earned from this fast is equivalent to performing great yagyas and charities.
  • Ancestral Blessings: This vrat also pleases the Pitras (ancestors) and brings their blessings.
  • Spiritual Elevation: Devotees who observe this fast with full faith attain Vaikuntha Dham (the abode of Lord Vishnu).

Mythological Story (Vrat Katha)

According to the Bhavishya Uttara Purana, there was once a kingdom called Mahishmati, ruled by King Mahijit. Despite having immense wealth and power, the king was deeply sorrowful because he had no son to carry forward his lineage.

The king, along with his subjects, approached the great sage Lomash Rishi for guidance. The sage, through his divine vision, revealed that the king had committed a sin in his previous birth — he had denied water to a thirsty cow on a Dwadashi day. Due to this sin, he was deprived of progeny in this life.

Sage Lomash advised the king and queen to observe the Putrada Ekadashi vrat during the Shukla Paksha of Shravan month with complete devotion to Lord Vishnu. The king and queen faithfully observed the fast, and by the grace of Lord Vishnu, they were blessed with a virtuous and brave son who later became a great ruler.
